Joensuu Airport is located in Liperi, approximately 11 kilometres from the centre of Joensuu. Joensuu is an international business city, and the flight connections to Helsinki and the world are crucial. The airport has good bus connections to the centre of Joensuu and back.

Joensuu is a growing university city and region with over 120,000 inhabitants and 6,000 companies. It is the economic hub of North Karelia and is located within easy reach of the Russian border. The 20,000 students studying in the city’s different educational institutions are very visible at street level. Joensuu is also one of Finland’s most entrepreneurial cities. It is home to the world’s largest forestry machinery factory, the headquarters of the European Forest Institute, a globally renowned locking system company and a business cluster that serves the international pharmaceutical industry. In addition, Joensuu is one of Finland’s four photonics hubs. It is a vibrant city full of young people and is well known in general for its wide range of tourist attractions and events, and in particular as the home of the Ilosaarirock Festival.
